Finding a Job in Cybersecurity Data Science

Finding a Job in Cybersecurity Data Science

In a previous blog post, I told you how you can set yourself apart from the competition, and prove that you have the knowledge and skills to be entrusted with the responsibilities of a Cybersecurity Data Scientist (CSDS).

If you’re reading this, you probably already realize that CSDS is one of the hottest and fastest growing professions to be changing Cybersecurity[1].

From the perspective of an employer (typically a large enterprise, such as a cybersecurity or finance company with large amounts of data), to let you be in charge of an important task (like designing and improving a next-generation AntiVirus or Insider Threat Detection solution) and to pay you the large salary that comes with this technical profession, you better have some proof that you know what you are doing!

In other words, you should have competence. At ML4CS.com, you can find world-class courses to get you to where you need to be in terms of knowledge and skills to enter the Cybersecurity Data Science profession.

In this post I’m going to discuss job opportunities. The trends of growth are obvious, so let’s talk about how to actually get a job in Cybersecurity Data Science.

Strategy 1: Let’s start with one of the most straightforward methods for finding a job as a CSDS. Do a Google job search:

Obviously, you can apply the same strategy by trying out Indeed and other variants.

Strategy 2: Visit the webpages of your favorite Cybersecurity companies and click “Careers”.

For example, let’s take FireEye. Go to Careers and then scroll down to Data Science:

Strategy 3: Network. If you know someone who already works at a company that has positions, ask them to put in a good word for you. Go to a career fair where your favorite company is, and hand them your resume.

For example, my alma mater holds Data Science job fairs regularly:

As a bonus, you can make friends.

Strategy 4: Linkedin. Sometimes, a great way to get yourself noticed by the hiring committee is to contact someone who’s already a CSDS at the company you are looking to apply to. Linkedin is a great option for that.

With these strategies, you should have a huge number of prospective options in your job search for a Cybersecurity Data Science position. Of course if you are going to apply, you better have the goods to back up your application. No one is going to give you responsibility over the cybersecurity of 50,000 enterprises if you don’t know what you’re doing! So if you haven’t started your training yet, begin by enrolling in the Cybersecurity Data Science course.
